Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

In this unit students will investigate materials that surround us and the properties that make them suitable for usage in. Success will be measured utilizing two labs and an exam. The goal is for a student average of 85%.


Students will be able explain the following by the end of the  lesson today:

  • The difference between atoms, elements, molecules, compounds, and mixtures.
  • What a periodic table is and how to utilize it.

Life Connection:

Students can use this information when solving problems in their lives. How so? Let’s find out!

Unit 1 is supposed to be in. Your IS teacher’s have been informed of who is on track and who is not as of this morning. Ask your IS teacher if they have it.


Task #1:

I want to look in on the unit work you have been doing so far and see what aspects need to be addressed.


Ticket Out the Door:

At the end of today’s lesson I will be passing out Post-It notes. On the Post-It note you receive write down the most interesting thing you learned today  and the most confusing thing you heard and put it on the inside of the classroom door as you leave today.


  • Unit 1 revisions if you need to. That unit needs to get in promptly so it can be given to your teachers.
  • Continue working on Unit 2 packet.
  • Look over the Periodic Table that was handed out and fill it out.
  • Create your periodic table here are the directions:

The Unit 2 Lab project. Remember the blank periodic table you got during your last class session? You are going to be filling it out! We are only focused on four pieces of data per element though. Atomic number, Atomic weight, Name, and symbol. After you finish your periodic table you will be doing a research projects on the elements. First create a Google slideshow and then chose 27 elements. 3 from each of the following groups:

  • Noble Gases
  • Other Nonmetals
  • Metalloids
  • Post-Transition Metals
  • Transition Metals
  • Lanthanoids
  • Actinoids
  • Alkaline Earth Metals
  • Alkali Metals

For each element each slide needs to contain the following:

  • Atomic Number
  • Atomic Weight
  • Name
  • Symbol
  • Group:
  • Definition:
  • Life Connection (Hint: use Abridged Periodic Table link below)
