Physical Science B SGI Lesson #21 (4-3-2019)








  • Explain how magnets can be used to separate different metals.
  • Identify metals that respond to magnets.
  • Explain how engineers use properties of magnets in everyday applications.

steel: A metal formed of a solid mixture of iron and carbon.

compass: A small magnet suspended so that it can freely point to Earth’s magnetic north pole.

lodestone: A naturally magnetized piece of the mineral magnetite.


Teacher’s Note: 

Before you leave today your paper and presentation need to be done, shared to me at and printed out. Additionally, you will need to pass the unit 9 test with at least a 70%. I will print out the test results.

Based on what you know, you now need to tackle this engineering challenge…

Congratulations, you have just been hired by the recycling company to streamline their sorting process. And, by streamline a sorting process, I mean you have a room full of metal that you need to sort into valuable steel, and considerably less valuable aluminum. You will be paid based on how much steel you can remove from this room per day. Remember, truckloads of mixed scrap metal will arrive daily, so you must be able to separate it efficiently. What are some ways to separate the steel from the aluminum? Think about time and cost efficiency. For example, hiring manual labor will be slow and costly.

Next Generation Science Standards:

HS-PS2-5. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that an electric current can produce a magnetic field and that a changing magnetic field can produce an electric current.


HS-PS3-1 Create a computational model to calculate the change in the energy of one component in a system when the change in energy of the other component(s) and energy flows in and out of the system are known.


HS-PS3-5. Develop and use a model of two objects interacting through electric or magnetic fields to illustrate the forces between objects and the changes in energy of the objects due to the interaction.
