Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Students will plan and carry out investigations which utilize models  in order to explain the interactions between non-living objects with 85% accuracy in 3 of 4 trials.

 

Learning Target(s):

Students will be able explain the following by the end of the  lesson today:

  • Branches of science.
  • Difference between scientific laws and scientific theories.
  • Lab Safety
  • Setting up an experiment

Students will decide on what to write here before they leave today.

Engineering Warm Up: (20 Minutes)

Science classes tend to be boring. We are going to kick our class off with an experiment! Plus ! This particular experiment may be one you are familiar with so you can try a new tactic with it.

MARSHMALLOW CHALLENGE

ROLES:

RESOURCES:

  • 20 pieces of spaghetti per group
  • 20 small marshmallows per group
  • 1 large marshmallow on top
  • 1 foot of masking tape per group
  • 2 pieces of copy paper. (1 for sketching and 1 to use if you wish in your build)

RULES:

Teams compete to build the tallest freestanding structure supporting a large marshmallow following these rules:

  • Pencil sketch of structure before construction materials will be given.
  • Build the tallest freestanding structure as measured from the table surface to the top of the marshmallow. The structure may not be suspended from another structure (like a chair, the ceiling, or a chandelier).
  • The entire large marshmallow must be on top of the structure. Cutting or eating part of the marshmallow disqualifies the team.
  • Use as many or as few of the supplies as your team chooses, with the exception of the large marshmallow (which must be placed on top of the structure). Your team’s kit includes 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, 20 small marshmallows, and one large marshmallow.
  • Teams may break the spaghetti and cut the tape as needed to create the structure.
  • Complete the challenge in 18 minutes. Teams may not hold the structure in place when the time stops. Touching or supporting the structure at the end of the exercise disqualifies the team.

 

Why this the engineering warm up on the first day Mr. Tyler? Check out this quote from another science teacher Frank Noschese.

“What is in the front and center of the classroom? It’s not an interactive whiteboard. It’s not an angry bird. It’s not a Sal Khan dart board. It’s a tower. A tower which represents success, failure, and risk-taking. The tower is built from uncooked spaghetti and tape. It is unimpressive and crude, perhaps leaning to one side while a marshmallow rests at the top. For me, however, the tower lives on throughout the year and becomes a symbol for the core value at the center of my classroom. You see, the unsuccessful teams typically wait until the 18 minutes are over before putting the marshmallow on top. In contrast, the teams that successfully build a tower which can support the marshmallow typically go through several cycles of building and testing during the 18 minutes. Build, test, modify, retest, repeat. It’s a feedback loop. – Frank Noschese

Ticket Out the Door:

At the end of today’s lesson I will be passing out Post-It notes. On the Post-It note you receive write down the most interesting thing you learned today  and the most confusing thing you heard and put it on the inside of the classroom door as you leave today.

 

Homework:

Review your vocabulary notes and Cornell Notes.
