Physical Science SGI Group Lesson #11 (10-24-2017)

Elements & Matter!

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

In this unit students will investigate materials that surround us and the properties that make them suitable for usage in. Success will be measured utilizing two labs and an exam. The goal is for a student average of 85%.

Students will be able to better explain the following by the end of the  lesson today:

  • The difference between atoms, elements, molecules, compounds, and mixtures.
  • What a periodic table is and how to utilize it.

Life Connection:

Students can use this information when solving problems in their lives. How so? Let’s find out!

Behavioral Norms:

  • Learn from mistakes
  • Tolerance
  • Participate
  • Personal electronics only when appropriate

1st Set: Matter, element, atom, molecule, compound, pure substance, mixture

2nd Set: Solution, Solute, Miscible, Homogenous, Heterogenous, Solvent, Concentration

Task #2

We will be conducting two labs today. Lab #1 will be regarding the temperature changes in cans of different colors and the other lab will be regarding a pipette in a 2L bottle of water. Following these experiments will be finishing up our unit 2 paperwork to make sure we are ready for the Unit 2 review and test this Thursday.

Ticket Out the Door:

At the end of today’s lesson I will be passing out Post-It notes. On the Post-It note you receive write down the most interesting thing you learned today  and the most confusing thing you heard and put it on the inside of the classroom door as you leave today.

  • Finish all Unit 2 work before class this Thursday (10-26-2017). Please stop by my desk if you need help. Remember the unit 2 test on matter is this Thursday after the review game.
