Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

In this unit students will investigate materials that surround us and the properties that make them suitable for usage in. Success will be measured utilizing two labs and an exam. The goal is for a student average of 85%.

Objective:

Students will be able explain the following by the end of the  lesson today:

  • The difference between atoms, elements, molecules, compounds, and mixtures.
  • What a periodic table is and how to utilize it.

Life Connection:

Students can use this information when solving problems in their lives. How so? Let’s find out!

Agenda:

Task #1: Reading (10 Minutes)

We are starting a new unit and new material today. The first thing we are going to do is get familiar with the concepts. I am going to print out for you a supplementary reading for the beginning of class for you to read first before we begin. I will provide highlighters. We will not be doing the activities in the pages. Just the reading for now. While you read, highlight the important parts, and underline any words or phrases you do not know.

Task #2: Vocabulary Flash Cards (5 Minutes)

New Vocab Terms:

Matter, Element, Atom, Molecule, Compound, Pure Substance, Mixture

Each student will receive seven index cards. You will write the term on one side and definition on the other.

 

Task #3: Vocabulary Circle Game (10 Minutes)

Utilizing one students flash cards stack we are going to form a quick vocabulary circle. This is a game to practice definitions. One random student will start with the stack of flash cards in their hands. The student directly across from them is up first. The student with the stack of cards reads the definition and only the definition. The student directly across from them then has to say the vocabulary term. This game is a time trial. We will do this game three times back to back.

 

Task #4: Visual Learners Venn Diagrams (2-3 minutes)

Task #6: Student Designed Venn Diagrams (8 minutes)

Now that you have seen what can go wrong with a Venn Diagram. You are going to design your own to show the true relationship between these categories. I will provide you the card stock to complete this assignment.

 

Task #7: Introduction to the Periodic Table (? Minutes)

Now I am going to give you your own copy of a Period Table and go through a ppt with you on what exactly the Periodic table is.

Ticket Out the Door:

At the end of today’s lesson I will be passing out Post-It notes. On the Post-It note you receive write down the most interesting thing you learned today  and the most confusing thing you heard and put it on the inside of the classroom door as you leave today.

 

Homework:

  • Unit 1 revisions if you need to. That unit needs to get in promptly so it can be given to your teachers.
  • Periodic Table Supplementary Reading
  • Unit 2 Pg 1-4 handout
  • Look over the Periodic Table that was handed out.
