Organized Crime

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

At the end of this unit students have stated they will understand how structured criminal organizations originated, remain in power, how they are affiliated, strategies they implement, and how dangerous each is. Additionally, students have stated they will have developed the following skills: reading, analysis, observation, and identification. Success will be measured by four specific student developed goal oriented objectives they have designed to measure success culminating in a student developed summative project at the end of this unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be able to recall, list, and describe common mafia slang terms utilized in the 1920s through 1950s. They will then be able to employ these terms in a fictional story in order to demonstrate understanding as well as experiment with using these slang terms correctly. Day #2 of this objective since we did not finish yesterday.

Task #1 – Photo Analysis

Take a look at the photo below of a mafia style hit in 1930 and use the downloadable photo analysis guide to examine this photo in detail. Then download the .doc file below, save it as a Google doc, retitle it “Period # – Your Name – La Cosa Nostra Hit Photo Analysis”. Answer the questions in the file.

Task #2 (25 minutes)

You will be examining a report entitled “La Cosa Nostra in the United States” by Dr. James Finckenauer. This report was written for the National Institute of Justice.

Step 1 –

Read each section and highlight the important information it contains.

Task #3 (40 minutes)

Once your you are done reading the report you will need to decide how you will present the information in an organized way digitally.  You are welcome to create a Google slide show or get more inventive like developing a  Prezi. However you design it you must complete and share your work to If you get creative and use a website like Prezi e-mail me a link to your work.
