Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

At the end of this unit students have stated they will understand how structured criminal organizations originated, remain in power, how they are affiliated, strategies they implement, and how dangerous each is. Additionally, students have stated they will have developed the following skills: reading, analysis, observation, and identification. Success will be measured by four specific student developed goal oriented objectives they have designed to measure success culminating in a student developed summative project at the end of this unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be able to explain and discuss the foundations and operations of the Russian Mafia. Today’s lesson is a duplicate from yesterday. The reason for this is because the level of work is just not present from the lesson yesterday. So today we are going to go back through the work and build each other up. I know the Costa’s Questions are tricky as a concept so we will be working on this particular aspect of yesterday’s lesson.

Warm Up – (5 minutes)

Task #1 – (5 minutes – Google Doc)

Create a Google doc with the following title -> “Introduction to Russian Mafia – Period 3 – Your Name”.  In this document you will be typing the questions below and answering them.

Question #1 (I know this seems like a random question, but wait you will see the connection soon).

“What is the purpose of government?” Your response must be 8-9 sentences and evidence must be given to defend your answer.

Task #2 – (10 minutes – Reference Material)

Now lets take a look at some notes I found on a history teacher’s website regarding life in Tsarist Russia. We are going to look over these notes only. This is just due to the fact that we need to get a reference for the time period we are talking about.

Task #3 – (5 minutes – Google Doc)

Question #2 How did the Tsarist Russian Government not serve its purpose as a government according to your own definition of 8-9 sentences?

Task #4 – (5 minutes – Google Doc)

With a fresh perspective in mind of life in Russia during this time period, I would like you to now answer this question.

Question #3 “What would your opinion be of an outlaw figure (Ex: Robin Hood). Taking basic life materials from the rich and giving them to you? Your response must be 8-9 sentences.

Task #5 – (50 minutes – Google Doc)

Now you will be seeing a clip of a documentary examining the purpose of Russian prison tattoos. As you watch these clips you will be developing 10 Costa’s level 3 questions below your introductory questions to this topic.

Task #6 – (10 minutes – Google Doc)

The tickets out the door lately have been getting sloppy and I believe that this is due to the fact some are feeling they do not have enough time to finish the ticket and others are not filling them out correctly. We are going to reserve the last 15 minutes of today’s class to go through how to fill out your ticket out the door card, what each section means, and why this is important.

Your Essay on La Cosa Nostra is due this Friday (4-1-2016)

Paragraph 1 – (8-9 sentences)

Introduce the reader to who La Cosa Nostra is, how organized crime operates, and some of the vocabulary that they used such as “A front” or “shakedown”. Additionally, introduce the reader to how many crime families make up the Italian Mafia, where they came from, and how they conflict with each other.

Paragraph 2 – (8-9 sentences)

Now explain how La Cosa Nostra began back in Italy and how they came to the United States. How did they force people to pay them “protection” money or force them to buy illegal products from them? Think about what you saw in “The Untouchables” film clips.

Paragraph 3 – (8-9 sentences)

Go into detail about how many families make up the Italian Mafia and how they conflict with each other. Think about the activities we did before break. Focus on how conflict started with how the families all wanted to own all of New York.

Paragraph 4 – (8-9 sentences)

Talk about how law enforcement tries to bring down organized crime. Think about the activity we did about undercover A.T.F. and D.E.A. agents who went undercover  and lied to get into the mob and once again think about the film clips you saw from “The Untouchables” and Elliot Ness’s efforts.

Paragraph 5 – (8-9 sentences)

Explain to the reader why they should care about organized crime and how it negatively impacts society.
