Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

At the end of this unit students have stated they will understand how structured criminal organizations originated, remain in power, how they are affiliated, strategies they implement, and how dangerous each is. Additionally, students have stated they will have developed the following skills: reading, analysis, observation, and identification. Success will be measured by four specific student developed goal oriented objectives they have designed to measure success culminating in a student developed summative project at the end of this unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will gain the ability to intelligently discuss an article by Dr. James Finckenauer’s concerning La Cosa Nostra for the National Institute of Justice. Students will appraise the information presented to them followed by organizing this data into a easy-to-read poster that will be peer-reviewed on Tuesday (10-6-2015).

C.C.S.S. Standards:

RH 11 – 12.5 – Analyze in detail how a complex primary source is structured, including how key sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text contribute to the whole.

Task #1 (15 minutes)

I e-mailed you during lunch today a link to a folder of the presentations you created in groups yesterday. Look over the presentations and vote for which one you think did the best job. Yep, there will be extra credit for the group that wins. You can click HERE to see the Google folder where the presentations are held.

Task #2 

We are going to set up a Cornell Note paper on “La Cosa Nostra”.  Download, save, and share the file below:

Assignment -> Cornell Notes – Smuggling – Period 3 – Your Name

Task #3 – 

We are now going to be partly looking at a couple documentaries written to show smuggling illegal goods into the United States. As we are watching we will be stoping the video every few minutes to write down evidence that is new to us about mob life in our Cornell Notes.

Task #4 – 

Once we are finished with our Cornell Notes we will be writing four more Costa’s questions.  Use the Mr. Tylers Guide to Writing a Level 3 Costa Question. Create a Google .doc  entitled “Costa’s Questions – Smuggling – Your Name”.

nceTask #5 – 

Towards the end of class we are going to stop and look at the Webb’s Depth of Knowledge chart. Specificially at Level 4. By yourself you are going to develop a way to extend our thinking about this topic.

Task #6 – 

Quick write. In one paragraph describe La Cosa Nostra to the best of your ability.
