Juvenile Offenders

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Student’s knowledge level of the U.S. juvenile justice system, in addition to that of other countries will increase by 70% by the end of this unit. Success will be determined by comparing students end of unit assessment results against those given at the beginning of the unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will continue to learn how to define and describe how other countries have established their juvenile justice systems with the goal of lowering the recidivism rate of their offenders that are minors. Time permitting today we will also be appraising the value of each of these systems.

Task #1 (15 minutes)

With our Cornell notes available from Task #2 on Friday (3-6-2016) on other countries juvenile justice systems, we are once again going to write four Costa’s Level 3 style questions, but this time about juvenile justice systems from around the world. Create a google doc entitled “Costa’s Questions – Juvenile Justice Systems – Period 3 – Your Name”.

Task #2 (15 minutes)

I will be e-mailing an invitation to everyone to edit a pro/con chart about juvenile justice systems from around the world. You can click HERE to VIEW this document, but you will not be able to edit it. To be able to edit it you need to go to your google e-mail through our school district and accept the invitation to edit. This chart will help us brain storm material for our essay in task #3.

Task #3 (50 minutes)

After you finish writing your Costa’s Questions you are going to write a five paragraph essay on juvenile justice systems. Create a google doc entitled “Juvenile Justice Systems Essay – Period 3 – Your Name”. Use the format below for assistance:

Paragraph 1 –  Introduction to the topic, the issues, and the countries you will be discussing (USA, Brazil, England, Mongolia, Georgia, Philippines).

Paragraph 2 – Which countries do you think are the most effective with juvenile justice? Why?

Paragraph 3 – Which countries do you think are the least effective with juvenile justice? Why?

Paragraph 4 – No one country has the perfect answer, explain what method you think would be the most effective in lowering the amount of  juvenile offenders and why you feel it would work the best.

Paragraph 5 – Explain to the reader why juvenile justice is an important topic and why governments should be focused on lowering the amount of juvenile offenders.
