Criminal Behavior HeaderTopic:

Examining the concept of “Economic Terrorism” / Assess the emotional impact of terrorists on a society.



Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

By the end of this three week unit students will be able to clearly and concisely state in writing the impact terrorism has had on global connections and national culture with specific citations.

Today’s Objective(s):

Students will finish their assessments of economic terrorist scenarios.

Warm Up:

  1. What similarities exist between organized crime and terrorism?
  2. How would you describe the emotional impact on the society that is attacked by terrorists?

Task #1:

First we will finish looking at some scenarios concerned with terrorism as we currently understand it and some with economics involved to see if when we see the real world scenarios of “economic terrorism” if we consider them to be real terrorism now. Download the PDF file below and follow the instructions. You will be using your chrome books for this activity.

Task #2: 

Next we will be looking at several terrorist attacks that were caught on camera and answering the following questions:

  1. How are the terrorists attacking their targets?
  2. Who are they attacking?
  3. Compare and contrast the attacks we saw. How are they similar and how are they different?
  4. What evidence can you find to support that these attacks actually would bring people closer together than drive them apart?
  5. Propose and defend a law or policy that you think should be enacted in order to increase our safety from terrorists without violating the privacy rights of innocent civilians.

Task #3:

In this unit we should analyze and understand the most recent significant terrorist attack the United States has faced. 9/11 We are now going to watch real footage taken from people in New York City from when the first plane hit the tower to the collapse of the buildings. While we watch answer the following questions.

  1. What did you observe in the video? Identify the emotions you may be experiencing while watching.
  2. How do the eyewitnesses react to the events as they unfold? What range of emotions are they experiencing? After the second plane, how do the reactions change?
  3. What coping skills by emergency services do you see present?
  4. How are the eyewitnesses coping?
  5. What insights do you gain from listening to the direct video and commentary by the people that were there?

Homework: (You will have these two discussion questions for homework tomorrow)

Answer the following two discussion questions:

  1. Discuss the political impact of the term terrorism. Why is it an effective political tool (or weapon, as Cameron Barr describes it) to accuse your opponent of being a terrorist?
  2. Being able to convincingly claim that your opponent is a terrorist grants enormous moral legitimacy to a party in a conflict. Is it important — or possible — to have a single consistent definition of terrorism? Why? How could such a definition be crafted?
