Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

At the end of this unit students have stated they will understand how structured criminal organizations originated, remain in power, how they are affiliated, strategies they implement, and how dangerous each is. Additionally, students have stated they will have developed the following skills: reading, analysis, observation, and identification. Success will be measured by four specific student developed goal oriented objectives they have designed to measure success culminating in a student developed summative project at the end of this unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will interpret the organized crime events depicted in the film “The Untouchables” and examine its contents using Costa’s 3rd Level of questioning.

Agenda:

Warm Up –

For today’s warm up I want to have a quick discussion about yesterday’s lesson. We looked over a documentary entitled “Murder Inc”, but it seems to have to done a poor job of depicting how organized crime was catalyzed in the 1920s due to Prohibition. I want to make sure I interpreted events correctly before proceeding onward with today’s lesson. Today’s lesson is designed to rectify the problems I saw in yesterday’s lesson plan.

Task #1 –

You will need a piece of paper entitled “The Untouchables & Organized Crime”. We are going to be looking at part of the film “The Untouchables” today in order to make sure we have a firm understanding of La Cosa Nostra life and organized criminals like Al Capone.  While we are watching the film I will be stopping it from time to time and students will be developing the Costa’s questions to examine and critize the material presented.

Task #3 –

Time permitting. After the film analysis we will be using Mr Tylers Thought Groups Directions to continue to break down the information further.
