Organized Crime

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

At the end of this unit students have stated they will understand how structured criminal organizations originated, remain in power, how they are affiliated, strategies they implement, and how dangerous each is. Additionally, students have stated they will have developed the following skills: reading, analysis, observation, and identification. Success will be measured by four specific student developed goal oriented objectives they have designed to measure success culminating in a student developed summative project at the end of this unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be able to recognize and explain key information about mafia life. They will then be able to fashion Costa’s Style questions in order to assist their peers think through the subject to a higher level.

C.C.S.S. Standards:

WHST 11-12.2 – Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events

*While Common Core Social Studies standards are currently under development my courses adhere to following the C.C.S.S. standards for English.


WarmUp –

On an index card answer the following two questions:

1.What are the primary means for making money for Cosa Nostra now in 2015?”

2. What would you say is the reason Cosa Nostra has lost power over the last 20 years?”

Task #1 – 

Lets go over the work from the last two days. I am going to explain what should have happened vs what did and lets see if we can improve the lesson so that it works.

Task #2 – 

We are going to set up a Cornell Note paper on “La Cosa Nostra”. Use the picture below to help you understand the set up if this is new to you.

Task #3 – 

We are now going to be partly looking at a documentary written to describe the life of a member of the Italian Mafia. As we are watching we will be stoping the video every few minutes to write down evidence that is new to use about mob life.

Task #4 – 

Every 10-15 minutes we are going to be challenging each other to think about the material by writing a Costa’s level 3 style question about an aspect of the film we just saw. We will be doing this on index cards. Use the picture below to help you write your questions when you are asked to do so.

Task #5 – 

Towards the end of class we are going to stop and look at the Webb’s Depth of Knowledge chart. Specificially at Level 4. By yourself you are going to develop a way to extend our thinking about this topic.

Task #6 – 

Quick write. In one paragraph describe La Cosa Nostra to the best of your ability.
