Organized Crime

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

At the end of this unit students have stated they will understand how structured criminal organizations originated, remain in power, how they are affiliated, strategies they implement, and how dangerous each is. Additionally, students have stated they will have developed the following skills: reading, analysis, observation, and identification. Success will be measured by four specific student developed goal oriented objectives they have designed to measure success culminating in a student developed summative project at the end of this unit.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be able to recall, list, and describe common mafia slang terms utilized in the 1920s through 1950s. They will then be able to employ these terms in a fictional story in order to demonstrate understanding as well as experiment with using these slang terms correctly.

C.C.S.S. Standards:

WHST 11-12.4 – Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
*While Common Core Social Studies standards are currently under development my courses adhere to following the C.C.S.S. standards for English.


Warm Up:

Look over yesterday’s results posted below and analyze how both periods 2,3 behaved during the paper cup activity from yesterday. Green means the group stayed intact, red means the group was disbanded. Period 2 did not have time to complete Round 4. Now, utilizing this data and citing it in your answer, state why criminal activity consistently becomes organized over time. After you have stated this answer look at the Mexican Cartel map. How did your actions yesterday mirror what you see in the map?
