Juvenile Offenders

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Student’s knowledge level of the U.S. juvenile justice system, in addition to that of other countries will increase by 70% by the end of this unit. Success will be determined by comparing students end of unit assessment results against those given at the beginning of the unit. Previous criminal behavior course grade data indicates student knowledge level of the subject gains at minimum a 60% increase in understanding. Today’s Objective:

Students will be able to verbally repeat and recall common vocabulary used in the Juvenile Justice system in addition to being able to describe the various juvenile justice systems from around the world.

Warm Up – “Chalk Talk”. Today when you come into class you will see the words “Juvenile Justice” written on the white board. By yourself or with a partner come up to the board and write a word or phrase you would associate with this topic. Don’t forget to put your names underneath.

Task #1 – First thing on our agenda today is to finish gathering evidence on our other juvenile justice countries. USA, BRAZIL, ENGLAND, MONGOLIA, GEORGIA, PHILIPPINES.

Task #2 – After reading through your recommendations from yesterday we are going to try a new version of our “Thought Groups” today using Costas Levels of Thinking and Questioning again.

Task #3 – To prep for our essay on Juvenile Justice we are going to look at some commonly used words in the Juvenile Justice System. These words can be downloaded below in two different formats. In class today we will make a reference list of these words followed by a “Conversation Competition”.

Task #4 – Vocabulary conversation competition between partners. You will be partnered up with the student next to you. You will need to have an entire conversation containing the vocabulary words we just went over. Once you get through all ten words your pair sits down.

Homework:

1- ( Due Friday 9-25-2015) Seven paragraph expository essay on the juvenile justice system. In an expository essay your goal is to, in this order, 1. Investigate 2.Evaluate 3. Expound and finally 4.
