Juvenile Criminal Offenders – Juvenile Justice Systems from around the world.

Unit:

Juvenile Offenders

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Student’s knowledge level of the U.S. juvenile justice system, in addition to that of other countries will increase by 70% by the end of this unit. Success will be determined by comparing students end of unit assessment results against those given at the beginning of the unit. Previous criminal behavior course grade data indicates student knowledge level of the subject gains at minimum a 60% increase in understanding. Today’s Objective:

Students shall be utilizing Costa’s Levels of questioning to continue further analyzing Kenneth’s case before defining and describing how other countries have established their juvenile justice systems with the goal of lowering the recidivism rate of their offenders that are minors. Time permitting today we will also be appraising the value of each of these systems.

C.C.S.S. Standards:

RH 11-12.6 – Evaluate authors’ differing points of view on the same historical event or issue by assessing the authors’ claims, reasoning, and evidence.

WHST 11-12.4 – Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Agenda:

Task #1 – Follow these directions for today:

1 – Form the desks into the standard groups of four that you know.

2 – Use the copy paper in the center to write your group number and your names on.

3 – As a group develop three level 3 Costa questions about Juvenile justice and/or Kenneth’s life sentence case.

4 – Once you have developed your three questions and they are approved by me I will give you a large post it paper to write your questions largely on. Leave space for people to answer them below.

5 – Once all groups are ready you will be moving table to table in a clockwise manner answering the Costa’s questions the other groups developed. You will have five minutes at each station.

Task #2 

1 – Before we move to the next task I want to let you know you will have till Friday (9-25-2015) to write a seven paragraph essay on the Juvenile Justice System. This essay will be done in an expository  style. In an expository essay your goal is to, in this order, 1. Investigate 2.Evaluate 3. Expound and finally 4. Set a clear Argument. I have created a PDF file below to help you get started on this essay. If you run into any problems contact me for assistance.

Task #3

1- Grab a lined piece of copy paper and fold it to make six boxes. At the top of each of these boxes put the following titles: USA, BRAZIL, ENGLAND, MONGOLIA, GEORGIA, PHILIPPINES.

2 – We will be watching a brief documentary today on how other countries have established their juvenile justice systems. As we watch this documentary you will be taking notes in each of these boxes on what specifically is unique to each country on how they are seeking to correct criminal behavior in juveniles in their country.
