Periods 2,3:

Criminal Behavior

Topic:

Prison Systems – Capital Punishment vs Rehabilitative Programs

Unit:

Prison Systems

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Students will be able to recognize the different correctional methodologies prisons around the world use when attempting to modify inmate behavior and formulate solutions to the weaknesses they identify in each system.

Today’s Objective:

Students will determine their personal stance on what methodology (capital vs rehabilitative) a prison should be using on their inmates.

Agenda:

Note to Substitute – There are two primary goals I need you to accomplish today. The first goal is to document how many out of 25 participation points you feel each student has earned today. The more a student is on task and working the closer to 25 points they are earning for the day. The second goal is to watch every students writing today while they are working. As soon as they are done with their writing assignment you need to initial the top left corner of their paper to show me that they did indeed start and complete their work during class time.

Step #1 – I want you to look over your results from yesterday’s online “You Be the Judge” activity. They are posted below for easy reference. You can also look at the other period’s answers. Some of you are doing well with the academic style of stating a claim and then backing it up with a minimum of three pieces of evidence, but many of you are still being brief in your answers. These undersized answers are costing you points in your grade. In today’s activity you are going to be writing a standard five paragraph essay on what you believe should be the ultimate goal of a prison system. Below I have outlined how each paragraph should look and what it should contain. You only have this class period to finish your writing and then have the substitute sign the top left corner to show the work was completed on time. After you have obtained your signature hold onto your paper and I will collect it from you tomorrow.

Step #2 – Today you will need a lined piece of paper and a pencil or pen. I want you to write a standard five paragraph essay addressing this question. “What is the purpose of a prison system? Is it to use capital punishment to make prison life so unbearable that no one wishes to return like we see in the Russian prison system? Or is it to use rehabilitative programs like we see in the United States to try and reintegrate criminal offenders back into society?”

Paragraph 1 – Introduction to your essay and answering the question above. Pick one stance and stand by it with three pieces of evidence. Your sentences should be in the following order: CLAIM, EVIDENCE SENTENCE 1, EVIDENCE SENTENCE 2, EVIDENCE SENTENCE, and SEGUE (smooth transition)SENTENCE TO NEXT PARAGRAPH.

Paragraph 2 – This paragraph should be further going into detail about evidence sentence 1 from your introduction followed by detail and then segue (smooth transition) sentence to the next paragraph.

Paragraph 3 – This paragraph should be further going into detail about evidence sentence 2 from your introduction followed by detail and then segue (smooth transition) sentence to the next paragraph.

Paragraph 4 – This paragraph should be further going into detail about evidence sentence 3 from your introduction followed by detail and then segue (smooth transition) sentence to the next paragraph.

Paragraph 5 – This paragraph is for focusing the reader on why this is an important matter and why they should care. This paragraph explains the impact of this topic on their lives.
