Today’s Topic –

Costa’s Levels of Questioning Introduction & Introduction to Psychiatric Disorders

Teaching Objective –

Students will begin learning to use costas-levels-of-thinking-and-questioning to examine cases as well as learn some of the basic Psychiatric Disorders Associated With Criminal Behavior.

Teaching Agenda –

Teacher’s Note – Period 2 will have to finish their writing assignment from yesterday before proceding onto today’s material.

Task #1 –

We are going to practice utilizing Costa’s Levels of Questioning to examine the case of H.H. Holmes further and force ourselves to think more closely about the evidence.

For our introduction to Costa’s we are going to form up our groups for the first time. If you look up on the ceiling you will see what group you are in based on where you are sitting. I will be giving out a large piece of paper and you will practice writing to and responding to Costa’s Level 1,2, and 3 level questions.

Task #2 –

Now we will be introduced to Psychiatric Disorders Associated With Criminal Behavior (Version 3). On a piece of regular paper that we are going to put into our notebooks we will be making a brief list of common disorders and noting some fictional examples for each. Please make sure to understand that this is an introductory level course so we will only be looking at several of the most common types of disorders. Additionally, we will only ever be analyzing fictional characters for practice. Unless you attend medical school you are not qualified to diagnose a real person yet.

Task #3 –

Students will set up a paper to take observational data on a fictitious character named Prot. We will be using a Cornell note taking style approach.

Task #4 –

After viewing the video clips of Prot you will be diagnosing him with a mental disorder(s). We will be using the Chavez Academic Paragraph Writing Format. Your diagnosis paragraph will be evaluated by yourself and a peer using the CCHS Academic Writing Rubric.
