Criminal Behavior Header

Today’s Topic –

H.H. Holmes – America’s First Serial Killer

Teaching Objective –

Students will be using their newly acquired knowledge of the 7 Key Theories on Why We Commit Crime and the Organized vs Disorganized Killer Chart to examine the case of H.H. Holmes.

Teaching Agenda –

Task #1 – We are going to break out our student notebooks and copy down our own version of the organized/disorganized killer chart for reference.

Task #2 – Now we are going to look at the case of H.H. Holmes. He was America’s first recognized serial killer who was operating prior to and during Jack the Ripper’s time in White Chapel, England.  During the case study we are going to take observational notes. In order to do this we are going to take a piece of lined notebook paper and fold it in half long ways so we have two columns. The column on the left will be labeled “Key Theory Evidence” the one on the right will be labeled ” Organzied/Disorganized evidence”.

Task #3- After getting familiar with H.H. Holme’s case, time permitting, we are going to practice utilizing Costa’s Levels of Questioning to examine the case further and force ourselves to think more closely about the evidence.

Task #4 – Lastely, now that we have gotten familiar with the case, examined the evidence, and taken observational evidence you are going to write a full academic paragraph analyzing H.H. Holmes and explaining which theory best explains why he turned to crime and if he was predominantly an organized or disorganized killer. An example of how to start your paragraph can be found below…..

“H.H. Holmes was predominantly a _________ killer whose behavior is best explained by ________ Theory. Sentence of supporting evidence 1. Sentence of supporting evidence 2. Sentence of supporting evidence 3.”
