Juvenile Criminal Offenders
Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:
Students will assist in determining the best legal course of action to help lower the juvenile re-incarceration rate.
Students will be developing their own summative juvenile justice unit.
Behavioral Norms (Student Developed):

- “Only one person is allowed to talk at a time” – Charles (22 votes)
- “If you feel like you are going to lose control or getting irritated you need to let Mr. Tyler know and stand outside his door” – Tyler (23 votes)

Task #3 – Identify the five main issues in the juvenile justice program
1. Relapse Rates
2. Suicide Rates
3. Unfair punishments
4. Co locating juvenile offenders with adults
5. Restricted/ lack of rehab programs
Task #4 – In groups develop a summative project for the juvenile justice unit.
Task #5 – Vote
As a class we decided that all four ideas had merit and that students should have the ability to choose which summative they want to do for this unit. The four results were:
1. Tri-Fold Board (groups 2,3,7) addressing the five problems
2. Interview (groups 1,8) someone who has been in prison to get their take on how it could be improved.
3. Essay (group 4) addressing the five problems
4. 3D model of a better Prison Design (group 5,6,9) so that adults and juveniles could be co located with better results
Task #6 – Brief analysis – Compare and contrast Miles Folsom’s behavior when he was in the Juvenile wing of Wabash Correction vs when he was transferred to the adult side.
Tonight I want you to take the five main issues with the juvenile justice system that we identified and develop one solution for each of these problems.
