Introduction to Serial Killer Behavioral Analysis


Serial Killers

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Students will be able to behaviorally analyze a killer without teacher’s assistance with 80% accuracy in 4 of 5 trials.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be given basic knowledge of the following famous serial killers: John Wayne Gacy, Albert Fish, Andrei Chikatilo, and Jeffery Dahmer. After initially reviewing this information students will retain their fundamental knowledge through some basic memory exercises.

Behavioral Norms (Student Developed):

  1. “Respect others opinions”- Selena (20 votes)

  3. “Only one person is allowed to talk at a time” – Charles (22 votes)
  4. “If you feel like you are going to lose control or getting irritated you need to let Mr. Tyler know and stand outside his door” – Tyler (23 votes)


One-on-One Murder, Modus-Operandi, signature, characteristics


Task #1 – Quick quiz to see what we have retained from yesterday.

Question: “What is the difference between a modus operandi and a signature?”

Task #2 – Quick verbal review of yesterday’s material

Task #3 – Introductory questions to go with todays video clips. Today we will be seeing experts ( Harold Schechter-author, Jack Levin – criminologist, Col. Robert K. Ressler – Founder of FBI -Behavioral Science Unit, Richar Laurie – Author) discuss the backgrounds and mental states of Gacy, Fish, Chikatilo, and Dahmer. As they are discussing I want you to answer a set of questions that have previously been prepared by me for you. These questions are meant to help you remember key pieces of information becuase I will be asking deeper follow up questions when we are finished.

Task #4 – After we answer the follow up questions I will be asking you to classify each of the killers we have briefly learned about using the notes you recieved yesterday from the Department of Justice.
