Organized Crime

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

Students will be able to identify and distinguish the differences between the origins, businesses, terminology, and mentalities of the following organized crime organizations: Russian Mafia, Yakuza, Mexican Cartel, and La Cosa Nostra in 3 of 4 formative assessment trials with 80% accuracy.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be using their newly acquired knowledge on the fundamentals of organized crime to form groups and develop their own mafias in order to understand the business like mentality of these groups. We have not yet gotten a chance to do this exercise and since today is a minimum day I think it is a perfect opportunity for it.

Task #1 – Housekeeping. Sorry I have been gone due to the birth of my daughter. I was back on campus today to check in on you and your work and keep us moving forward.

Task #2 – Form into groups

Task #3 – Each group will receive an adequate amount of time to answer the questions below. Once each group has determined their answers. Put them on the chart on the whiteboard.

1. What’s the name of your mob/mafia?
2. What kinds of organized crime are you involved in/commit?
3. Where is your turf located?
4. How do you become a made man/wiseguy/OG in your mob?
5. Who’s the mob boss? Consigliore?
6. What is your front?
7. How many soldiers do you have?
8. How many captains and how large are their crews?

Task #4 – The Mafia Boss World Wide Conference.

1. Each team will send their bosses to the chairs in the center of the room.
2. They are now attending the Worldwide Mafia Conference.
3. Bosses – take a seat then go around the circle and introduce yourselves. Who are you?
4. Bosses – now try to find out as much as possible about the other outfits.

Task #5 – After the Conference go back to your groups.

1. What groups are your biggest threat? Why?

2. What was the most common business the other groups were in?

3. What groups could you form alliances with to muscle out the others? Why do you think that group would join you?
