Prison Systems / Introduction to Stalking

Unit S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

90% of students will be able to state the differences and similarities with different prison systems from around the world as well as know the pros and cons to these various systems.

Today’s Objective:

Students will be wrapping up their Prison Analysis Unit and voting on whether to start the Organized Crime unit or Stalking unit next.

Behavioral Norms (Student Developed):

Agenda:

Task #1 – First I am going to go over the summative project on the Prison Unit. The summative will be due this Friday (2-20-2015). The directions for this assignment are below:

Summative Prison Unit Essay Directions:

You will be writing a standard five paragraph essay. You can choose to either handwrite or type this assignment. The outline of what you need to cover per paragraph is below.

Paragraph 1 – Introduction. What is prison? What is its purpose?

Paragraph 2 –  How other countries have set up their prisons

Paragraph 3 – Pros and cons to the prison system in general. Side effects of the prison system

Paragraph 4 – How it could be improved. State three ideas.

Paragraph 5 – Why people should care about the prison system.

Task #2 – Student Vote. Should we do the Organized Crime Unit now? or the Stalking Unit?

Results – > Organized Crime Unit = 2 votes, Stalking Unit = 27 votes

Task #3 – Due to popular vote we will now do the Stalking Unit. As an introduction to this topic we will be looking at a case where a woman was stalked for 10 years! but first! I want you to try to define the word “Stalking” before we go any further.

Task #4 – Now I am going to briefly go over some information from a Professor from California State Bakersfield on Stalking. We will not be taking notes on this presentation, this will just be to give us some background on the topic.

Task #5 – Having gained some background information we will now watch a 20 minute documentary on Colleen. A successful comic book illustrator who gained an obsessive fan. Following the documentary I want you to try and answer the following questions before you leave today:

1.Who is Walter?

2.Why does Walter become attracted to Colleen?

3.How does Walter become more aggressive over time?

4.Why couldn’t the police help in 1987?

5.Why do you think Walter brought his mother?

6.Walter was able to get his friends to go visit Colleen. What does this tell you about Walter?

7.How do you think this would have played out if Walter was not institutionalized?
