Today’s Objective: 

Students will wrap up their diagnosis of Norman Bates in group today and begin their transition into analyzing the U.S. Prison System.

Agenda:

Task #1 – Lets take a look at what the Police Psychologist thinks of our patient “Norman”.

Task #2 – Now we are going to break into groups. In each of your groups I want you to come to a consensus on three things about Norman. Be prepared to have someone go up to the board and write your answers so we can compare. The three things are:

1. Which of the 7 key theories on why we commit crime do you think best explains his behavior?

2. Is he an organized or disorganized killer?

3. What mental disorder do you think he is primarily suffering from?

Task #3 – Brief review on the essay about Norman that will be due this Thursday.

Task #4 – Now we are going to begin looking at the prison system. First we will look at the one here in the U.S. and then we will be comparing and contrast other nation’s prison systems.

Task #5 – Lets set up another observation sheet. This time it will be on copy paper horizontally. I will show you on the whiteboard how to set this paper up.

Task #6 – We will be viewing a brief documentary on the Illinois Supermax Prison. We will be observing only four of the inmates. The inmates are: “Stone”, “Miles”, “Lukuman”, and “Chris Trotter”.

Task #7 – Once we finish the viewing you will be picking one of the prisoners and doing a behavioral report on them. This report will include the following fields: Criminal Theory (Of the seven key theories which do you believe explains why this inmate commits crime, Organized vs Disorganized (Use your cheat sheet, does this person appear to have an organized or unorganized nature?), and mental disorder (Are they suffering from a mental disorder? Why or why not?).

Begin working on your essay for Norman Bates that is due this Thursday. Remember to state which theory you believe explains his personality, if he is organized or disorganized, and what mental disorder do you think he is primarily suffering from.
