Organized Crime – Mexican Cartels

Objective:

Students will examine and analyze how the cartels are making money, the economics influences on their operations, and US-Mexico just efforts to fight the war on drugs.

Agenda:

Task #1 – Introduction to the concept of supply and demand. We will see how a supply and demand schedule get formed and then graph them out. We need to understand that the economic forces that goven corporations like Wal-Mart affect these organized crime units as well.

Task #2 – Now lets look at some of the extraordinary ways that the cartel has tried moving drugs into the United Staetes.

Task #3 – Having looked at more information for context of the problem let looks at what the U.S. and Mexico have been doing to fight the drug problem. The first thing we need to look at is the Mérida Initiative. You can see the slides we looked over in class today by opening the PDF file below.

Task #4 – Last thing we are going to do today is break down the pros and cons of some of the ways U.S. and Mexico have been fighting the Drug War.

Homework:

This weekend I want you to write one academic paragraph on if you think the Mérida Initiative will be effective or not. Rememeber 1 sentence making a claim and three supporting that claim.
