5 Minutes – Students will be broken into groups for discussion.

5 Minutes – I will explain how the discussion questions will be addressed in each group.

TEACHING AGENDA –

Teacher’s Note – I think we would understand the formation of the Mafia and its power better if we as a class understood what Prohibition was about. I don’t think we truly understand the American mentality of the 1920s just yet. So we are going to take a step back today from Mafia to look at Prohibition and its affect on American life.  Additionally we will be looking at why Prohibition began in the first place.

5 Minutes – Introduction to today’s topic with a brief discussion about what is Prohibition?

4 Minutes – View video segment #1. – The Immigrant Invasion

5 Minutes – In pairs students will answer the questions associated with this segment. These questions are on pg. 7 of the PDF file under today’s “Student Resources”.

5 Minutes – View Video segment #2 – American becomes an Urban Multiethnic Nation

5 Minutes – In pairs students will answer the questions associated with this segment. These questions are on pg. 7 of the PDF file under today’s “Student Resources”.

7 Minutes – View video segment #3 – The Time is Now

5 Minutes – In pairs students will answer the questions associated with this segment. These questions are on pg. 7 of the PDF file under today’s “Student Resources”.

15 Minutes – In pairs students will be looking over the differing opinions and viewpoints on alcohol. They will use the information the got from video segments 1-3 to fill out a graphic organizer. Prohibition Viewpoints – Graphic Organizer

20 Minutes – Students will be put into groups and each group will represent a viewpoint. Then students will be shown 4 pieces of legislation. They will read the legislation and decide where their viewpoint would stand on that piece of law.

HOMEWORK – Review the material today for a quiz tomorrow at the beginning of class.
